Judged by Sue William Silverman

Sue William Silverman is an associate editor of the literary journal Fourth Genre: Explorations in Nonfiction as well as a professional speaker on the issues of child abuse, family dynamics, and addictions. She received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Aquinas College for her work in literature and child abuse victim advocacy. Sue is now on the faculty of the Master of Fine Arts in Writing Program at Vermont College. Sue’s memoirs have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Norwegian, and German. She lives in Michigan with her cat, Quizzle.


Caketrain is currently seeking the best creative nonfiction essay or memoir for its first-ever nonfiction prize. Authors of previously unpublished manuscripts in English are encouraged to enter.

First Prize: $200 and publication in Caketrain Issue 03
Runner-up: $75 and publication in Caketrain Issue 03

All submissions will be considered individually for publication and entries must be previously unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but author must give notice if work is accepted elsewhere. Entry fee is $12 for each submission. Multiple submissions okay as long as reading fee is enclosed. Limit 3 separate submissions per entrant.

Checks should be made payable to Donna Weaver, Editor. Each entrant will receive a copy of Caketrain Issue 03. The reading period is from November 22, 2004 to April 30, 2005. Please do not send manuscripts outside of reading period. Manuscript should be 6000 words maximum, double-spaced, single-sided and bound with a clip. Please include SASE and cover letter with name, address, phone number, e-mail address, the piece’s title, and an approximate word count. Your name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript. Manuscripts will not be returned; all are recycled.
