Our first issue presented an opportunity to try and define ourselves, so we tried, and we did. Here you will find an epic new “historomantic” meditation on Maxo Vanka, as told (directed, perhaps?) by the esteemed Richard Blevins; elements of domestic horror and religious history united—in ways, trust us, other than the ones you’re imagining now—in the verse of Laurie Mazzaferro; “Talking Long Distance,” in which Rina Ferrarelli takes the slightest of scenarios and molds it into an emotional monolith; and eight poems from the prolific David Baratier’s faux-found series, “Estrella’s Prophecies.” The neoRorschachian explosion of ink on its cover has been identified by readers as “guys,” “war,” and “kung-fu guys.” Remember, firstly, that you are free to disregard these interpretations in favor of your own or those of another, and secondly, that your interaction with this book cover is both expected and smiled-upon.

Ever-Shrinking Universe: How nifty was it to learn, almost two years after the fact, that Issue 01 contributor Susan Brennan interviewed Issue 01 contributor Jeffrey Ethan Lee for her Radio Poetique series in June 2004, the very same month that saw the return of Issue 01 from our printer? Pretty damned nifty. Listen to the result, which is even niftier (scroll down to June 6, 2004).

Caketrain is a literary journal and press based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Our interest is in bringing you, reader, the very best in contemporary creative writing, full stop. Our goals are for each issue of our journal to submerge you in a birthing tank for gelatinous language monsters, young masses of tentacular foci undulating as directed (in all, at once) by our eclectic stable of contributors; for each new book to seduce and ensnare you, sometimes intangibly, always undeniably; and for you, reader, to be able to draw at least one passage from our banks that prods your mind with a precision and power that feels as if it was written for your eyes alone. To wit and to whet, here is a snippet, a slight nip of our delicious lit mix:
